primers not seating

I've run between 8000 & 10,000 rounds through my 650 over the last 2-3 yrs. I've never had a problem with the primers seating fully, but with the last run of about 250 9mm rounds I reloaded, approximately 1/5 of them had a problem with the primers not seating completely. The worst of them has about 1/3 of the primer sticking out. The least of them is just barely protruding. Two questions:

1) What could have caused that?
2) Can I run those live cartridges back through the second stage of my 650 just so I can try to reseat the primer? There's a part of me that says it shouldn't be a problem, but they ARE live cartridges.

Make sure the primer punch is fully seated 'snugly'.  See figure 170 and 171 in owner manual (available on-line if needed).  You might want to remove, disassemble and clean all the gunk out, reassemble, coat with Hornaday dry lube.

Do not rush the up stroke and seating. Make sure you fully press the primer in, 'feeling it' a full seat.

I will let another respond on re-seated with fully (re) manufactured ammo.

Hey Shawnee,

Two things on the primer seat punch. One is the assy backing out and being too low to push up all the way. Two the shell plate is too loose and as the primer punch goes up to seat the primer, it pushes the shell and shell plate up. If both are secure and adjusted properly then look to see if the primer pockets are loose fit and primers are falling back out. Happens in cases that have been loaded too hot.

You may press the primers back in on the dillon but think about the accidental discharge possibility. Because you CAN do it dosent mean you SHOULD do it.

Hope this helps.
