problems when switching calibers
Quote from Reloader on November 11, 2011, 6:19 pmhey guys, I'm new here and just want to say I really enjoy my SDB. I have it set for .357 mag and it reloads flawless rounds consistently. I have a separate tool head with .38spl dies that I am trying to find the proper settings for.
When I change the tool head over to load .38spl I run into problems with the press. I'm noticing a jerky movement when cycling the handle, and the press makes a squeal towards the bottom of the handle travel. I tried adjusting the blue nut on the end of the failsafe bar but I'm not sure this is helping. I'm guessing the powder die needs to be moved.
Also, just to make sure I am doing this caliber change correctly, can some one point me to the right place for instructions on die seating? I think I'm setting the dies the right way, but I'd like to be sure.
Thanks in advance.

Quote from Reloader on November 12, 2011, 4:52 pmI did look at youtube but found some general overviews and a lot of stuff concerning the 550b. I re-read the manual just to be sure I'm getting it right. My big concern is the squeaking noise. I don't know why the press would be fine for one caliber and then get noisy/jerky when I switch over.

Quote from Reloader on November 12, 2011, 8:10 pmAfter taking everything apart, cleaning and inspecting moving parts for grime, clogs, etc I noticed the threaded portion of the fail safe rod was slightly bent. It appears this was never an issue when the press was set for .357, but the adjustments made to the powder die when switching calibers caused the bent part to rub the base plate near the primer catcher. I straightened the fail safe and the ram now travels freely with no noise or jerkiness. Once I get time I'll verify the adjustments on the .38spl dies and move on from there.
