Putting on springs

I broke the ring indexer on my 650 this past weekend and I noticed that there were some complaints about putting the spring back on.  The way I was shown many years ago to install springs in a tight area is to use a piece of fishing line. In my case I took a piece of monofiliment about 18 in long and threaded it thru the end of the spring holding the open endsof the line. I then put the spring on the front post on the indexer and threaded the line around to the back of the machine. I pulled the fishing line tight moving the spring into the groove, The end of the spring with the line was then placed over the pin in the back. When firmly in place let go of one of the ends of the line and pull it out. This works better than spring hooks and Pliers, no damage to the spring and the whole operation takes just seconds.

this must be the month to break ring indexer! i just finished replacing mine . Did the same idea process as you describes using a piece of twine. Worked well . Only complaint I have , other then the ease in which these things break is that after I had the platform all back to the point of replacing the spring . The little tab on the indexer where you hook the spring snapped off!!
Had to take it apart and replace another ring indexer.   Good job the price is right !
