RCBS small base 300 blk

I have been loading my 300 blk on a chucker for years. I’m using the rcbs small base dies which requires me to set the die at the shell plate. In order to set the die to the proper location to form the brass correctly on my new 550, I have no threads showing to lock the die in place with the lock ring. What am I missing here? I have not read any other complaints about this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I’m missing something simple, take it easy on me.

Thanks

Is there room/threads to put the lock ring on the underside?
JJ

Thanks for the reply. When I put the lock ring on the bottom it collides with the index star. My thoughts are to drill and tap the tool head and install an allen screw to secure the die. I just don’t understand how I’m the only person with this problem.

I realize this is an old thread and maybe you sorted out the problem.  I think you'll avoid the conflict with the star wheel and lock nut on the bottom of the die if you use a Dillon locking nut.

@tequilajack    Can you send a few pictures of your resolution?

I can't visualize it in the little walnut I call a brain

Here you go.  This is my setup using a Mark 7 trimmer.  I also have a Dillon 1200 but for some reason I can't get the vacuum manifold to work right when I'm trimming 300BLK brass.  I use a mini chop saw to remove most of a 223 brass and then use the trimmer to do a final to size trim.  Note on picture 2 that the lock ring is installed on the bottom of the tool head.  As you noted there aren't enough threads at the top of the tool head.  The Dillon lock ring is smaller than any other's I've used.  Picture 1 shows the location of the second resizing die.  It's an RCBS Small Base Sizer for the 300 BLK caliber.  I also prefer a Small Base die for .223/5.56

For trimming 300 BLK, we now have a short trim die toolhead, Modified RL550 Toolhead for RT1500 Trimmer (dillonprecision.com)

This works with the RT1200 as well, and includes a modified exhaust chip manifold.
