Reloading 300 Weatherby...Squishing Brass!

Hi, I'm reloading a bunch of 300 Weatherby, and all is going fine (nickel plated brass...and Scirrocco II bullets)...

but when I switched over to regular brass cases, after I try to seat a bullet, it squished the bullet back into the brass...

(the brass is pressed down into the rest of the case...so that you can't even see the bottleneck part of it!)

Any thoughts as to what's the problem?

TIA

Sounds to me like the bullet seating die has lost its adjustment.

Unscrew the bullet seating die and install an empty, resized shell into the machine and run the shell plate up. Then turn the die back down until resistance is felt and back off 3/4 of a turn. That way the roll crimp will not engage the brass. Snug the lock ring down.

Lower the platform and unscrew the bullet seating stem, place a projectile on top of a case (with powder and primer), run the shell plate up, and then adjust the bullet seating stem down until you feel resistance against the bullet.

Lower the press and check to see if the bullet has straightened out and has begun insertion.

Continue to turn the seating stem down and check your OAL after each adjustment until you have the correct length. I have found the Hornady bullet comparator is a wonderful tool for tracking this process.

Please, tell us what you've found at the end of your process.

Readjust the seat die body. It sounds like the crimp ring in the top of the seat die is pushing everything down.

To adjust this, back the seat die body up a few turns. Put a sized, empty case in the shellplate at that station. Pull the handle down, elevating the case. With the handle down, screw the die down with your fingers until you feel it stop on the top of the case. Back the die body up 1/8 of a turn. Fingertighten the die lock ring. Now, adjust the bullet seat stem for overall length. Once the seat depth is adjusted, run a loaded cartridge up into the die. With the cartridge in the die, tighten both lock rings, in any order.

THANKS!  I did adjust the seating die (after cleaning it out and checking inside)...and no more crushed cases!
