removal of shell plate detent ball

I recently changed back from 45 LC to 45 ACP after havihng not reloaded in quite some time.  My problem is that when the press is working fine, it works great.  When I have problems, There seem to be several at once.

First, I was having problems with consistent primer feed.  I would have several in a row work, then I would get some that would be without primer.  I found that it seems to be flipping good primers out of the cup, as I found the same number of primers laying about on the bench and caught up in nooks and crannys on the area of the primer mechanism.  Not sure what is going on.  Sometimes they were flipped sideways in the cup.  I had no problem with this loading 45 LC a few months ago, and did not change that part of the set up.

The other problem is that the shell plate was loose and not properly indexing.  Investigation shows that the detent ball has gotten a bit gunked up from powder spills, etc, and is not springing up against the shell plate.  I can push the ball down and it stays down rather than springing up.  I would like to clean the pocket, but cannot pull the ball out.  How can I get behind it to push it out of the blind hole?

Thanks

I managed to use some alcohol and pushed up and down until the  ball popped out.  Cleaned up everything with a brush and some alcohol.  We will see if that works.

Try a magnet - works really good !

The primer feed may be screwed up because it needs to be adjusted to the specifications in the owners manual. Additionally, ensure that you are using the cup and punch for the primers in LARGE PISTOL size. This is the same size for both .45 acp and .45 Colt.

Look in the press and watch the primer feed out of the tube. There should be very little space between the cup and the tube. If there's too much space, the press will occasionally flip primers. The height of the cup can be adjusted by loosening the screw on the side of the primer slide (hold your hand over the cup... trust me). Then you need to do the 3-handed dance where you hold the cup down at approximately the right height and tighten the screw. You won't get it right the first time.
