Rifle reloading

Okay I have only been reloading for 2 years and I have a Question about 308 bullets. I recently bought some hornady sst 180 grn. They have a ring around the bullet. I assume that this is for crimping. However if I seat the bullet far enough to crimp on that ring my bullet is way shorter that I want. So do I have to crimp on that ring?

There is no mandate that you must seat to that level on the bullet. Seat the bullet to where it feeds reliably and performs best in your firearm.

Thank you..
