RL550B Help

I have an RL550B that has recently started to operate rather stiff. I first thought that maybe the main shaft was getting dirty so I disassembled and removed the main shaft and the main shaft pivot pin at the bottom of the shaft. They were all cleaned and re-lubed. I also cleaned the bearing area inside the press itself. The main shaft moves very well when I tried it before fully reassembling. I re-assembled and things operated much smoother. However after just loading about 25 rounds it is getting stiff again. I can't seem to easily remove the link arm pin or the solid link arm pin and the hollow link arm pin. So I left those alone. Any ideas??? The press does not have that much use to date. I have had it for a long time but I don't reload that much. It is always covered when not in use. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

I have had the same problem. My RL550 press had not been used since 2001. I have kept covered. I started reloading again last week, and found the press very stiff. Today I sprayed the moving parts with silicon spray, and it started operating a lot easier.

The crank is usually the part that needs cleaning and lube (bottom part that the link arms attach to and the main shaft).  I recommend a liberal use of Hornaday One Shot.  Let soak.  Start with 30 WT oil to get things moving smooth, then move to bearing grease on pivot pins.

It truly sounds like the upper pivot pins are dry and have started to gall. To get to them, you need to remove the main shaft first. Then run a punch through the hollow right link arm pin and drift out the left pin. Then run the punch through the hole in the frame to drive out the right pin. Use a wire wheel or scotchbrite pad to remove any transferred metal off the pins, smooth the holes in the link arms with sandpaper, regrease the pins, and reassemble.

Use 30 wt motor oil on the shaft, and any good quality grease on the pivot pins.

Had the same issue, although it appears to be a intermittent one. Glad I checked the forum since I never did hear from Dillon support!
