SDB - Primer Catching
Quote from Reloader on November 30, 2009, 2:10 pmI have been stumped here and could use some advise. Question is pending with Dillon.
Everytime I advance the handle and the action moves forward from the primer removal stage 1 to readiness for primer in Stage 2, as it turns, the spring loaded primer holder below catches on the die as it turns. This in turn sort of snaps the primer out of the seat and bounces it. Some cases it does nothing, other times, it flips the primer onto it's side and when I press it into the casing, of course it is in sideways and no good.
Some cases, it flips fully over and seats backwards.
This has caused me issues galore and as a result, I have had to slow my actions right down and it takes forever to load a box of ammo.
I use the 9mm set and small primers. Federal Pioneer.

Quote from Reloader on November 30, 2009, 3:53 pmit sounds like the primer cup is catching on the underside of the shellplate as it comes up through the hole to be seated. The most common cause for this is the primer seating punch and cup are not fully seated in the primer slide. To confirm and correct, first unbolt the primer feed from the frame of the machine, by removing the three mounting bolts. Next, unhook the coil return spring from the bottom of the primer slide, then detach the primer slide from the primer feed. Now, using calipers, measure from the underside of the primer slide to the top of the primer cup. This measurement should be 1.410", +/- .003". If too tall, use a clamp or vise to reseat them, then retighten the set screw.

Also be sure the primer pin is fully seated. I put it in a vise to fully compress it and then tighten the set screw
