SDB Problem

A friend has acquired a SDB with several conversions. He is having problems and asked me to check out his machine as he knows that I have one as well.

First of all, found a broken screw that holds the shellplate in place. Had another in the spare parts kit that he bought so installed that. When taking the broken screw out I went a level deeper to clean under the shellplate (very dirty).

As I assembled the plates, I managed to launch the detent ball and spring. Even in a fairly clean room was unable to find the spring. Made one from a mechanical pen spring. Seemed to put enough upward pressure on the plate.

Q1: What is the proper size of the detent ball? The one in the press is small compared to the one that came in the spare parts kit. Reused the small one.

Now have another problem --- with the primer system. As reported in WDPhillips posting 2013-03-04, the primer slide causes the cup to hit on the bottom of the shell plate. Your answer to him may not be my problem since my friend had loaded several hundred rounds of .44 Special before trying to convert to .45 ACP.

I did note that the primer slide return spring seemed to be stretched on the back half which makes it too long/soft so that the slide does not go fully forward. Pushing it forward with a finger as you operate the handle allows the primer cup to center and go up thru the shell plate.

Q2. Am I correct in concluding that the spring is the problem?

Do not have the press at my location to check the measurement that you gave to WDPhillips.

The SD detent ball is 1/8''.

Have your friend email us, include a list of these parts, and his address. We will send him replacements. I suspect the spring is more likely the issue with his primer feed.

In case of have to, use a steel bb, idid and it is still in the press.
