shell plate hanging up on primer cup/punch

I have an issue with my shell plate hanging up on the primer punch/cup on my small primer slide.  If I raise the shell plate slightly by lowering the handle, it clears the primer cup fine.  I am also having a problem with the primer slide hanging up slightly where it doesn't always pick up a new primer.  I've cleaned and honed the slide.  I haven't used the large primer recently so I'm not sure if it is doing the same thing. I would appreciate any help anyone can give.

Thanks

It sounds like you are attempting to rotate the shellplate with a primer in the cup. The anvil extends up enough that it catches the bottom edge of the shellplate. The machine is intended to have the shellplate rotated with no primer in the cup, as is done when loading progressively on the machine.

If no primer is in the cup, the cup itself cannot protrude far enough to drag on the plate.

Thanks. Yes, that is when I noticed it.  I was getting the dies set up so I was only running one case at a time.  Do you have any thoughts on the primer feed issue I mentioned in the original post?

I am having the same problem. It happened for the first time today when I changed caliber.
The primer sits slightly to high in the cup. So I have to pull the arm a little bit to turn the shell plate. This was ok before.

Hope someone can help. 🙂

I recently experienced the same problem that you have described and was able to successfully resolve it.

I had over-tightened the blue wingnut at the end of the fail-safe rod. This put excess tension on the spring and caused it to recoil (oscillate) too vigorously when I let pressure off the handle after seating a primer. The excess recoil jostled the primer and left it "cocked-up" slightly sideways in the primer cup. This exposed a primer anvil, which dragged on the shellplate and prevented its rotation.

I unscrewed the blue wingnut a few turns (which reduced tension on the spring and reduced jostling of the primer) and the problem was solved. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Remove the operating rod from the primer feed. Now pull the machine handle down and leave it down. Manually pull the primer slide rearward, see if you feel any drag. It may be the short end of the operating rod needs grease where it goes into the hole in the bracket it pivits in.
