Shell Plate Retaining Screw

Page 1 of 2Next

This is the second time in a few months that the shell plate retaining screw has broken.  I lube underneath before each reloading session.  is something wrong?

Just be sure you aren't slamming the handle when seating a primer, or aren't trying to prime crimped primer pockets, seat large primers into small primer pockets ( in 45ACP). Those are the most common causes.

It happened on the upstroke, I use steady upwards presser when priming. I'm not using crimped primer pockets.  The press is only used for 9mm.  Any other ideas.  Is the screw a warranty part.

The screw is a warranty part. Please phone or email us for a replacement. If you email us, please include your address.

Thanks for your help.

I had the same problem with my SDB.  On the upstroke, the shell will sometimes stick on the powder drop flaring die. It seems to happen worse when the cases are dirty on the inside.  It seems to almost cause a little jolt when it yanks the case free from the flaring die. The only thing hold the shell plate down against this force is the shell plate retaining screw.

I started lubing my cases with Dillion Case Lube.  This helped some but not totally better.

I'm actually going to try one of those tumbling case cleaners with stainless media.  They appear to clean the inside of the cases much better.

From what I've read, tumbling your cases with stainless media will get them so clean that they will stick like new cases.

How do you remove the broke piece of screw/bolt ?

The threads are fairly loose. Press the eraser end of a pencil down onto the top of the broken bolt, then turn it counterclockwise. It will back out.

Dillon,

After 20K rounds I finally sheared a shell plate bolt, and no it does not come out with an eraser. Any other ways of removing the broken piece?
