Shooting
Quote from Reloader on July 7, 2008, 6:50 pmDillon,
Here are the specifics:
I am shooting an Ed Brown Cobra Carry 45ACP
Berry Mfg Bullets 230 grain round nose
Alliant (Bullseye) smokeless powder (4.6 grains)
Winchester Case
CCI Large pistol Primers
I shot my first round of reloaded bullets and I noticed black specks on my forearms.
Is this smokeless powder? Am I doing something wrong?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Quote from Reloader on July 7, 2008, 9:19 pmIt certainly sounds like unburnt or incompletely burnt powder coming from the ejection port. Check your crimp diameter on a loaded cartridge, at the case mouth it should measure .468-.470" diameter.

Quote from Reloader on September 17, 2008, 3:15 pmI did reload 30 more rounds and have not had a chance to go to the range to see how the rounds are. I did have to pull one of the rounds and I noticed a ring around the bullet where it was crimped (I did adjust the crimp to be around .468 - .469) is this too much of a crimp or a roll crimp? I do not want to create too much pressure in the case.
I would rather ask and not have a problem than blow up my gun.
Always appreciate you advice.
Thank you in advance.

Quote from Reloader on September 17, 2008, 9:21 pmIt is not unusual to see an indentation in the pulled bullet from the crimp. .469" is about as tight of a crimp as I prefer, but overpressure is not a hazard, only decreased accuracy. Excessive crimp can sufficiently reduce bullet diameter that bullets tumble.

If you can't tell where your shirt sleeve begins and your arm starts, and the oil is running down the web of your hand, then your starting to shoot almost enough. It's actually no problem. It happens to me all of the time. I use 3.7 Bullseye and a 200 gwc. This has been a target load for a long time. Good Luck.

Quote from Reloader on December 7, 2008, 3:21 pmThat load should be ok but may be a little hot for Berry's Mfg bullets. I would reduce to 4.4 grains! Yes it is smokless powder. It sounds like you had excess oil in your chamber and on your fine Ed Brown Cobra .45 Cal. Clean the weapon and re-oil per manufacture's instructions. If it shoots well, buy a bar of soap and just wash your forearm after shooting.
