Should I downgrade my 650XL to a 55OC?
Quote from Reloader on January 12, 2020, 3:18 pmI purchases a barely used 650XL with case feeder and all the options from a Snippers Hide member... it’s still in the Dillon boxes. Pistol loading for 9mm is no longer a priority - shooting PRS now, 308/6 Creed. I have an arbor press for seating, external primer, and a V3 Auto throw for powder and an external trimmer... wanted to have one press on the bench and use the 650 for brass prep (3 stations)... decapping, FL resizing, Sinclair turning mandrel. Is the 650 the right tool?
I would welcome opinions/experience on:
1) case feeder... great idea for pistol brass, but will the lube on CF rifle cases gum up the workings?
2) can I disable the primer mechanism?
3) I plan to use the UniqueTek clamp kit with the Whidden floating tool head... comparable... is the 650 as “tight” as the 550C?
4) Truing up the shell plate? There are more mechanics associated with a progressive, what Dillon or aftermarket parts/adjustments are possible to reduce variability in this moving bass?I would be well served with the 650... but with retirement just around the corner, loading 9mm on the 550C wouldn’t be a hardship.
Thanks for your input, and assistance!

2) Detach the primer cam from the upper right side of the front frame strut to disable the primer feed. There's no adjustment to this cam, it is either present or absent.
3)waste of money. You get the same results using our standard toolhead. Always tighten die lock rings with cases in the dies, and always have a fired case in station 1 when setting the other dies. This ensures consistent upward pressure on the toolhead.
4) not relevant. The case being sized in station 1 pushes the shellplate down.
The manufacturing tolerances are the same for the RL550C, XL650, etc. One loader is not more precise than the other.
