Sizing Die Problem

I have just started reloading 38 Spec. on my Dillon 550B, using Dillon Dies. I ran into a problem while sizing the brass, after sizing you can slide the bullet into the cartridge with hardly any effort at all. This seems to be mostly limited to R&P brass. Has anyone on this forum ran into this prblem, and what is the solution. I have loaded 45 & 9mm without any problem. I have adjusted and readjusted the dies several times.       Thanks; larry351

Larry,

Using a micrometer, measure/check the OD of both: the Dillon neck expander die & (of course) your bullets .....   suspect that the bullet's OD is undersize here.

Feelthy I measured the Bullets and they were .3565, I don't think this is the problem.    Thanks; larry351

Are you using 110 gr. or 125 gr. jacketed bullets with this brass?  If so it is simply a compatibility issue, different, thicker(Remington brass is thinnest) brass will hold tighter.  If not, call us a 1-800-223-4570 to obtain a RMA # to return the die for exchange.

Thanks Dillon; I am using 125Gr. JHP, I didn't know that there could be a problem when using lighter weight bullets, I also didn't know that Remington brass was the thinest of brass. Thanks again for the info.   larry351

Yes, the 125 gr bullets, running even 1/2 thousandth undersize in conjunction with thinner Remington brass can result in a combination that will not hold the bullets tight. Try a different brand of brass.  While you are at it, check to make sure that you have letter D powder funnel.

Since you stated that you load for 9mm make sure you're not using bullets for 9mm as they are typically .355-56.

larry351, we have already replied to your situation previously.  If you are still having problems I suggest that you give us a call at 1-800-223-4570.    Our tech people are there M-F 7-6, Sat 8-3 mst.

I have the same problem when loading .38 sp - the projectile just slides in to the case even after the case was sized at station 1 (I use XL 650). Any adjustment of the sizing die does not help. Also the bullet can be turned in the case even if it was crimped rather hard.

I guess I have too thin brass as you suggested but I have to use it as I bought a lot of it. Can you help me?

can you seat the bullet by hand? Being able to turn the bullet in the case after crimping indicates excessive crimp.
