Small primer feeding problem

I cannot get small primers to feed properly in my 550B. When the Primer Slide goes back, it will not pick up a primer. it looks like the Primer Slide Return Post is hitting the Flexible Orifice Small. I try making sure the tube and orifice does not go down too far but once it has the weight of primers in it and the Primer Shield Cap is put on and the follower rod is in, it pushes down the Orifice so it hits the Return Post when it comes back. I replaced the Orifice but it would not go in all the way as it had a plastic deformity on the slot, I sanded it a bit and it also does the same thing.

I'm now manually putting primers on the machine until I can figure this out. Any thoughts?

OK, after looking at some other posts the height of the Return Spring Post from the bottom of the Primer slide is to be between 1.215 and 1.220 in. So I checked mine at it was too high. After some trial and error with different clamps I was able to get the height properly set and the problem went away.

I see that the picture that shows this setting is not in my old manual but is in the latest one here online.

But I'm having one other problem, in order to get a primer to drop onto the return post/Seating punch I have to tap on the Follower rod and I can hear a slight "click." and feel the primer go in. is this because of a new Orifice and it will loosen up over time?

i am watching this post with interest as too have had issues but only with small primers.
doesnt seem to be generating a whole lot of replies...

1. check out the Dillon video on cleaning primer feed system. Bottom of the videos in the Resources -> Videos section (first part is cleaning the case feed, section section is cleaning the primer slide).

2. Check out page 5 of the manual. There is a picture of the primer slide and recommended heights to the primer cup. Adjust to spec.

3. I found Hornaday One shot Dry Lube on the primer slide and Primer Track Bearing helps a lot.

4. Set the Early Primer Warning so it just touches the primer shield. To tight and it will bind/deform the plastic end of the primer magazine tube. Check magazine tube that tip is not deformed and also in the slot at the bottom of the primer shield.

2. I recommend that you call Dillon when you are in front of the loader. They will be happy to debug the problem with you.

Say Dillon: Debugging this problem would be a good video to have.
