Stiff operation on xl650

The operation of my new XL650 has just become very stiff all of a sudden, does anyone here have any idea how to remedy this ?

My first guess is that the shellplate bolt has tightened. Does the shellplate rotate easily by hand in clockwise direction? If not, loosen the set screw on the left side of the shaft, back up the shellplate bolt about 1/8 turn or so, and resnug the set screw.
