Switching presses ???

I have used a RCBS rockchucker with the piggyback II for 15 years. I just bought a Dillon XL650 & took 6 hours setting it up last night. (I had to remodel my bench & switch calibers when I got it) I am having a hard time understanding the 650 because I used the RCBS for so long. I loved my RCBS but I wanted a case feeder!! I have my old RCBS dies I planned on using, I have it set up for .40 right now & I have a 3 die set, do I even need the 2nd die in the set now that the dillon bells the case at the powder station? I thought that was the only purpose of the 2nd die in the set. I am going to mess with it more tonight.

Do I want the roller handle? It looks cool but is it worth the $$$.

I use the Lee dies with mine, I am a novice with this press as well, but no, we don't need the "powder" die with the XL650. It comes with it's own. That is where the powder "tool" goes into.

I guess I am more fortunate than you as the Square Deal is the only other progressive press I have used. They are similar, kinda.

I had mine up and running in a short amount of time and have changed calibers 4 times now!

I ran 500 rounds in less than an hour last night for son #2. Nice shooting 45ACP target loads. He had to load the primer tubes though! 😉

FWIW

I have got it figured out now it just took a little bit. I have already run off about 2000 rounds of .40. I love this machine, I get a crushed primer or a case feeder jam every now & then but the time I am saving allows plenty of time to deal with the minor problems like that.

The roller handle is more than worth the cost.

Alls it will take is the first blister in the palm of your hand after an extended loading session to convince you that the roller handle is a bargain.

Yep you want the roller handle and the Strong mounts, Worth the time and effort. If you are having primer issues, do the pocket swedging on the primer pockets. Might be some malformed holes and this speeds up the loading process...

I just switched to the XL650 from an RCBS PRO2000. I never did like those APS strips. After having a feed problem with the strips I installed the tube primer conversion. RCBS told me to stay with the APS strips, but there was no way after 1/2 a strip blew up in my face. I was never fully comfortable with the machine after that incident. I have yet to run any ammo as I have been sick the past couple of days and I was waiting on some items to arrive. I have everything all set up and ready to go. I really like the Dillon dies and I have either purchased one for every caliber that I load. That would be 9MM, 38/357, 45 ACP, 45 Colt, 223 Rem, 308 Win, 30-06. I really like the whole idea of having a crimping die and was having a hard time getting them from the other companies.
