The best deer hunting caliber
Quote from Reloader on November 24, 2010, 3:52 pmRecently, my dad and I bought a Remington 770 chambered for 243 WIN as a deer rifle. I talked to a few people who said 243 was too light for deer, and they'd prefer 270. I have friends who have 243s up to 30-30s, and I've gotten mixed opinion. One guy even told me he made a killshot on one with a 223 Rem at 300yds, so I'm not sure what my next rifle purchase should be. Questions, Answers or comments are welcome.

Quote from Reloader on November 24, 2010, 8:16 pm.243 is not a bad choice for deer hunting by any means. The only issue with it is that shot placement is far more important than with larger calibers. Bullet construction is more important as well. In 243, I would suggest a premium bullet, such as a Nosler partition.
I have used .270 Win, 30-40 Krag, 45-70 and 35 Remington to hunt deer. In no case could the deer tell the difference between them. I would consider the range you hunt at, how open the terrain is, and if you must shoot offhand, from a blind, etc.

Quote from Reloader on December 27, 2010, 2:04 amThe guys (and gals!) on properties around us use .243, .30-30, .270, 8mm, and 7mm mags. The only difference between the .243 and 7 mag is the size of the bruise! All the deer were the same degree of dead. If you shoot it well and hit them in the lungs your good to go. Light bullets for varments and a good heavy bullet for deer. I use a .270 myself but I can't kill them much better!

Quote from Reloader on March 9, 2011, 8:28 pm(6 x 51) .243 is a good gun for a freezer stuffer ,up to 175 lbs. If your hunting in heavy brush ,a .30 cal won't deflect as much as a smaller bullet

Quote from Reloader on March 24, 2011, 1:30 amA .22 lr will travel more than a mile and kill a deer. My feeling is that the animal should be put down humainly with a quick kill. The most widley used cartrige for deer is 30-06. .270 is a great deer cartrige. A bad shot with a .243 may lead to an extended blood trail. A bad shot with a 30-06 will leave a shorter blood trail.

Quote from Reloader on April 2, 2012, 5:30 amLots of deer have made their way to the freezer by way of the .243... Whats best depends on where you hunt and your ability to place the shot... and there is NO SUBSTITUTE for practice... Personally, the last deer i shot moved about 4 feet, mostly sideways. I hit him in the shoulder with a 300 gr JHP from a .444 marlin at about 80 yds.
