Tight shell plate rotation

I have a small issue when I tighten the shellplate bolt. When I get all the slop out I have a tight spot where the shellplate wants to hang and not rotate smoothly. I have marked the index sprocket at station 1 and clocked the spocket to a different postion on the shellplate. Happends at the same spot everytime.

Tried different caliper shell plates.. Same issue.  Thinking that the indexing spocket where the shellplate bolt seats is not flat and true.  Anybody ever seen this before?

Make sure you have grease on the bolt.  That might help.  I expect you will need to call Dillon for a replacement bolt.  You have tighten tell just snug and then backed of until the shell plate turns?  You may be trying to keep the shell plate a bit to tight to  the frame.

I found that where the shell plate bolt seats in the index sprocket, the spocket seat was not perfectly flat where the underside of the shell plate bolt rides.. I took some fine valve lapping compound and coated the sprocket and reinstalled everything loosely. After about 4 minutes of rotating the shellplate and tighting the bolt the tight spot disappeared. Cleaned everything up, relubed and its good to go. No more dragging or plate wobble, Smooth as glass.

I have the same issue which I have been living with for years. Thanks for the tip, james5m, I'll give it a try.

I used valve grinding compound between the sprocket and bolt. Spun it around a few dozen times while tweaking the bolt a bit tighter until the tight spot was gone. Cleaned it up and re-lubed. Works like a charm now. Only need about 1/50th of a turn to get it turn freely now. Great tip james5m!

I had exactly the same problem and could not figure out what my problem was. When you have the shell adjusted where it can turn freely be sure to tighten the set screw on the shaft securely. This keeps the bolt from tightening while you are indexing the plate. Don't know if this will help you any but it sure cleared the problem for me.

I would like to try using the valve lapping/grinding compound approach.  Can anyone recommend a brand name or coarseness/fineness of valve compound?

Also, two commenters mentioned re-lubing after using the valve compound.  I assume you mean lubing between the underside of the shell-plate bolt head and the index sprocket.  What type of grease do you recommend?

Is there any danger that the grease will travel down the shell-plate bolt and cause the set screw to no longer lock the shell-plate bolt in place?

Thanks for any advice.

any bearing or firearm grease is fine. Use grease, not oil, to prevent migration.
