Trailboss Powder

Is it better to use the large powder bar when loading Trailboss? When I use the small powder bar to load 4.5 grains of Trailboss, I get powder falling outside the case on every 3rd or forth round. Not a lot of powder, just 4 or 5 pieces, but it is annoying and does mount up. It is a big powder and loads usually push the max for the small powder bar.

Having the same problem. Im loading .45 Colt with 6.0 gr Trail Boss and my loads are varying by a half grain. Im using a new powder measure and there is a ton of static inside of the hopper so what I think is happening is the powder is bridging in the funnel. A friend of mine is using Trail Boss and having no problems. I know I didn't answer your question but maybe someone can help us out. It's a pain in the ass constantly cleaning the primer cup and trying to get a consistent load.

Thanks Rocco. Are you using the large or small bar?

TJ,

I doubt that the large bar can even drop such a small amount. Since I've not used Trailboss, I will assume its like IMR powders which is a "stick" form. IMR gives me fits for just the reasons you're having. Go slow, and I add a little tap at the end of the down stroke and I give it a second or two to completely drop. I pretty much have given up on IMR and just use small ball or flake powders as they meter much more easily and consistently (most powders from Alliant/Hercules work well for me).

Thanks divejj,

Trailboss is a rather large size donut shape powder. I would estimate that 4.5 grains of Trailboss will take as much space as 30 grains of H110 or Bullseye. This is why I am asking about using the large powder bar.
Guess I will just give it a try and see what happens. 🙂

I know the large bar will drop 5 grains of Trailboss , I suspect it will drop 4.5 grains as well. Powder falling outside the case has nothing to do with the bar used. It is probably static causing the powder granules to cling. Wipe the hopper and measure using a dryer sheet.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Your problem may be caused by static electricity, I ran into this problem on my MEC shot shell reloader. I eliminated it by making up a cord, like a extension cord that I cut off the black and white 110v wires {and capping them} and just using the ground wire {green wire}. I connect it to the press and then plug it into a grounded receptacle . Static charge problem solved.
