Under charging or Double Charging

I am looking at purchasing the RL550B.  I have never reloaded before and I am very worried about under charging a round and causing a squib load or somehow double charging a round and hurting somebody.  Any words of advice?  Is weighing each round after it's loaded a good safetly check?

You could weigh each charge, but a double charge is often quite visible. The Dillon powder measure is very consistant, and once the measure is correctly set up and adjusted, quite reliable. The best recommendation is to start slow, run a single case through all the stations until it is loaded, then load the next case and complete it. COntinue in this manner until you are comfortable enough to load progressively.

You should get into a routine and be in a place and time when you will not be interrupted.

1. Insert case

2. Look into shell just loaded with powder (easy on pistol cartridges)

3. Place Bullet

4. Pull

5. Set Primer

Case-Check-Bullet-Pull-Push

Initially on start, run about 10 or 20 powder drops into your single shell. Put this powder into your weight cup to measure the total later and divide by 10 or 20 to get the average grain weight.

Your confidence will grow, but powders are different. You may need to watch Varget closer.

Have only had my 550B for just under a year and have found that my machine is VERY consistent in dropping a powder charge.  I typically check every 50 rds and have found it to not move even a tenth of a grain.  Before I start, I put in an empty case and cycle about 10 times, dumping the powder back into the bin on each pull of the lever.  I weigh the charge on each round and once I am confident its not moving, I start reloading.  I would't hessitate to buy a Dillion and just use common sense and you will be fine.  Hope this helps!
