what type of press do I have
Quote from Reloader on January 29, 2013, 5:47 pmWhere do I find the model of the press that I inherited? I know it is older and right now it has a 38 special base on it. If it is a 450 would it be cheaper to just get a new 550 or to upgrade. If upgrading which part should I start with? Thanks Richard

Quote from Reloader on January 30, 2013, 3:23 pmI think this question is probably one best answered by Dillon and YOU; based on what machine you inherited-- and what calibers, pistol and or rifle you intend to reload & how much reloading you intend/expect to do. That being said, if you do have a 450 machine, I think if you have a 450, and want to do a lot of reloading and upgrade it to a 550, you have to buy a 550 frame kit for it(~$95-$100), then multiple other system upgrades to get you to a good working RL550B machine(maybe$300-$350+ ? ).
And if you have just a basic 550 machine(& not a 'SquareDeal' machine-see Dillon machine pictures), then the upgrade is probably somewhat less, but still substantial.
Plus more expenses for more toolheads, powder funnels, shell plates & dies for any other calibers you want to reload-- consider it all a long term 'investment' if you are serious about reloading. If I inherited a 450 & just 1 caliber(.38/357?) and wanted to reload as much as I do now, I think that I'd put it on e-bay while the market is hot for reloading machines and order a RL550B, and move on. But it all depends on what you intend to do with 'reloading' & how much you intend to do.
