Why upgrade my 450 to a 550?
Quote from Reloader on September 15, 2011, 2:21 amI recently acquired an RL450B Jr press with an "Option B" powder dispense system. This unit was new in the box with instructions and all parts needed to load 38/357 and .45 ACP. I'm happy, but wondering if I "need" to upgrade to a 550B? What are the practical reasons for doing so? I've been doing some reading on this forum and it appears as if I can still buy additional caliber conversion kits and drop them into my 450 and go. What advantages does upgrading give me? Also, my understanding is I will need the Frame Change Kit, an Auto Prime System and an Auto Eject System for the full 550 upgrade. Is this correct?
Thank you,
Max.

Quote from Reloader on September 15, 2011, 2:45 pmThe RL450 will produce quantities of high qualitiy ammunition as it is. The advantages of the RL550 upgrades are that the frame with the detachable toolhead makes for faster caliber changes, and the auto powder & auto prime systems eliminate a manual operation, increasing the production rate. It depends on your ammunition requirements as to whether or not these upgrades are cost-effective for you. The RL550 conversions freely interchange with the RL450, as do most other parts. If you change caliber frequently, then the new frame might be advantageous. If you need a higher production rate than you currently get out of your 450, then adding the auto upgrades will help that. There is no difference in the quality of the finished product.

Quote from Reloader on February 27, 2013, 10:42 pmSo if I purchased the upgraded 450 frame... the only advantage is the interchangeable caliber heads? I already have the powder and primer upgrades on my 450. I am thinking bout adding the auto ejector.
Is this correct?
