Working with 5.7 brass
Quote from shaskell1959 on July 4, 2024, 4:07 pmThe FN 5.7x28 brass has a factory finish on it. I bought a set of hornady die’s, FL resize. When I run once fired brass through the hornady die a portion of the finish is rubbed off, the amount of finish and location is different for each shell. The appearance looks crappy.
I’ve used 40 & 35 grain bullets with a ball powder (carefully weigh each powder load). The results have been excellent, flat line loads with low SD’s. Put your progressive reloader away and pay attention to the details.
Now back to the brass. The appearance was bugging me so out came my small propane furnace and heated them up just to the point of burning the finish off. The brass looked nice but were too soft to work through the die.
Has anyone spent time working 5.7x28 loads and would like to share their experience?

Quote from The Human Manual on July 5, 2024, 5:53 pmThe 5.7 x 28 brass has a light varnish coating. This coating acts as a lubricant for feeding rounds through the FN rifle magazines, where the cartridge rotates 90 degrees. The handguns do not require this for feeding. Use clear fingernail polish to touch up any areas of the case where the varnish scraped off.
