XL 650 Case Feed Issue

PreviousPage 2 of 2

How curious... I've had my XL650 for nearly 4 years now and loaded at least fifteen thousand rounds if not more and have never had a problem with that part... until today, which led me to this post. In my case it was the spring beneath the case feed slide that failed, and popping in the spare spring from the XL650 maintenance kit got me right back in business.

I have had the case feed cam fail twice now, both the same way... the helicoil inserted in the side uncoiled when changing calibers. Both times Dillon sent me the entire 'kit' (slide, cam, spring, spring retaining thingee and screw) for free. The most recent failure occurred this week, and it took all of 5 minutes to arrange for the replacement to be sent.

Now, I can understand a spring failing after considerable use. But I have to wonder if there's a defect in the presses that are gouging the underside of the case feed slide. Another possibility is that the rod that holds the slide back isn't adjusted correctly or the cam that it rides on isn't kept lubed with grease. I replaced the rod with one I bought on ebay that has a bearing mounted in the end, so it rolls. You can see a video of this in action at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYE1lYizJz8

I have a brand new XL 650 (less then 1 week) running 9mm as set from factory ran flawless, changed over to 5.56 and started having case feeding issues (case jam at end of tube) I make no adjustments, switch back to 9mm and same thing will not feed cases properly (case gets stuck in green bushing).

How do you remove the case slide on the 650?

Page 37 of the manual should tell you how.

I had a similar problem with the helicoil unwinding itself into the slide so that I had really pull to get the cam off. Dillon said they would send a new assembly right out. While waiting I decided to remove the slide to clean and regrease it and the helicoil on the other side also unwound itself. I wonder if there is a design issue with using the helicoil.
