XL 650 vs RL55B w/Casefeeder

I own an RL 550B with a casefeeder. I like it fine, but I wonder if the XL650 would be worth upgrading to. I would sell my RL550B, keep the strong mount, bullet tray and other transferable add-ons. But it would be nice to have the powder check station and auto indexing.

So I would like to ask those who have used both if they think it's worth the money and the time to go for the upgrade to an XL650. Thanks for any guidance you can provide!!

Mark:

Sounds like you deserve a new toy!  I am not one to  sell anything, so hang on to the  550 leave her set up for your second favorite caliber.

Purchasing a new 650 is like buying a gold coin.  It will always have value and its darn easy to convert it paper currency if the need arise.  You know what these units were selling for on EBAY a year ago!!

Buy it and be happy

Value is in the eye of the beholder Mark. I started out with the XL650 about a month ago. I had never handloaded before. I can tell you this. If you shoot allot I think the upgrade is absolutely worth it. I played with a 550 (and liked it allot) before buying the 650 and the thing that made up my mind for me was the volume of ammo I use in a month. Since the 2nd of June I've gone through about 1200 rounds. All my handloads. I figured anything I could do to speed up the loading process while turning out good quality rounds was a plus. I don't regret starting with the XL650.

I was in a similar boat a couple years ago when I got my 650. My choice was between the 650 and the 1050 however. I tried the 550 at my friends house after using a single stage RCBS for 30 years. I really liked it and could buy his so he could upgrade. My friend convinced me that he would have / should have gotten the 650 if he could have. He was short on cash when he bought and he still wishes to upgrade. He convinced me not to scrimp on the machine. Once I started looking seriously at Dillon, my choice was between the 650 and 1050. The 550 was out of the running. I liked some of the benefits of the 1050, but in truth, you gain only the primer pocket swaging station and still need to eliminate the powder check station to add the Mr Bullet feeder on the 1050 and you don't have the LIFETIME warranty as you do with the 650. In my opinion, there was only one choice. Get the 650, and even if you need to sell the 550 on ebay, they seem to go for decent money. I kept my single stage and now use it for pulling bullets. I load more now than  at any other time of my life, and if I get a reliable source for powder, I'll be at the range every day. Go for it.

Happy loading, jj
