350 Legend
Quote from Reloader on October 15, 2020, 4:01 amI tried my turned-down 9mm Hornady PTX funnel in the press today and determined that it was too short for 9mm Luger. So instead of going to work like I was supposed to, I took a damaged .223 case and stretched it out to 350 Legend diameter and cut it to the 350 Legend length of 1.710". After doing this, I determined that a #F funnel would need to be cut down to an ideal length of 1.687", however, at the case flaring end, it is turned-down to a diameter of .508" for an extended length. As such only 0.700" length of the 5/8" (ish) diameter funnel body remains. That length doesn't seem ideal to ride up and down in the the sloppy bore that is otherwise known as the Dillon Powder Die, but it would probably work. The Dillon funnel I reworked for 6mm ARC was not hardened, at least at the top.
The Hornady powder funnel was very hard so I had to anneal it. I cut it down and re-formed the tapered funnel part with a dovetail router bit. The ¼" shank of the router bit was the perfect size to serve as a pilot in the bore of the funnel. I held the router bit backwards with those needle-nose type vise grips while turning the funnel slowly in the lathe in the clockwise direction. I then re-hardened the funnel and polished it. The flaring end on the Hornady funnel is not as nice as that of the Dillon funnel, and the reviews on its flaring ability are mixed. Mainly, people say it sticks, but of course it would require lube. The Hornady funnel does not have such an extended length of lesser diameter on the flaring end and the (now) 5/8" (ish) section is 1 1/8" long.
350 Legend bullets are supposed to be .355" in diameter, but must be much longer than handgun bullets. Hornady makes a spire point 170 grain bullet, but the internet does not know how long they are, and Hornady does not say. Anywhere. C.O.A.L. is 2.260" and the case is 1.710" long which leaves 0.540" *plus* what should be another 0.350" for seating depth. So bullets need to be around 0.890". *If* the Hornady bullets are about that long, it looks like they can be pushed over 2200 fps with H110 says QuickLOAD, which seems pretty impressive.

LOL, mental math fail. Should be 0.900", but close enough!

Quote from Reloader on October 16, 2020, 4:41 pmThere seems to be a #9 Powder Funnel, also, used by 9 X 18 Makarov. The bullet seems to be 3.55" also. It would have been nice if someone mentioned the length of the #D funnel. I only know that it is shorter, and the expander end is .002" too large.

Quote from Reloader on October 16, 2020, 11:32 pmAha! Found it! 0.885 Inches for the Hornady 170 Interlock Spire Point. That was a pretty good guess! www.midwayusa.com/product/1021205725
I've only seen 16" barrels on 350 Legend. I wonder why...

Quote from Reloader on October 18, 2020, 1:09 amOkay, two more. The Lee Universal Decapping Die is taller than the Dillon Powder Die and could be modified more easily than a funnel. There's a flat section at the top that could be made a little wider to accept the clamp and the threaded section at the top and the body could be drilled/bored but be careful to leave a step so that the powder funnel does not fall through. The #F Powder Funnel would likely work in this configuration if all that is needed is an extra half inch or so.
Also, with a specifically dedicated powder measure, the drop tube might could be shortened a bit to accommodate a funnel which is too long. By chucking the drop tube in a drill chuck, the splined drop tube can be carefully pried from the cast body with two screwdrivers placed between the chuck and body, to be more easily worked-on.

Quote from Reloader on September 23, 2021, 5:30 pmIs there a 550 conversion kit available for the 350L now?
If not, which funnel will I need, there appears to be conflicting information on whether it's a D or F funnel.
Thanks

Quote from Reloader on September 23, 2021, 10:58 pmI have since read that 350 Legend bullets can be either .355" or .357". The Hornady Spire Point Interlock bullets are .355". Ohio regulations state .357" minimum, but they have decided the .355" is acceptable. Since Dillon can't even get the sizing dies they need, I'm sure this is on the back burner. If I were you, I'd contact the people at...
www.photoescapeinc.com/products/powder-funnel.html
...and tell them what you want, and that there is a need for a custom funnel for 350 Legend. The length I determined in a previous post works in my '650, but I haven't tested it in any other press. And, of course, it will be much more expensive than the Dillon funnels!

I am now in possession of a #D Funnel, which came with my 21098 conversion kit, and can unequivocally state that sadly, it is also too long for 350 Legend. The #D Funnel is 2.414" long and my #F Funnel is 2.873" long. The 350 Legend funnel that I modified from a Hornady PTX funnel to fit the Dillon Powder Die is 1.670" long. My Powder Die is screwed all the way out such that any further extension would no longer engage all the threads. With the shellplate fully raised, the #D Funnel then extends .46" above the Powder Die. As expected, the diameter of the #D Funnel's expander is .002" larger than that of the #F expander. However, the #D Funnel does not have the extended section that is turned to a lesser diameter so would be better suited to shortening than the #F Funnel. A shortened #D Funnel might still be a problem when using .355" bullets, though.
