550b .223 Help Bushmaster
Quote from Reloader on April 6, 2008, 2:15 amHello, I am new to relading and I just purchased a 550 with .223 Carbide Dillon Dies. I have a Bushmaster Stainless Varmint Special. When I load a round in my AR mag it fits perfect, but when I try to chamber the round it jams.....Then I pull back on the charging handle and then it will chamber the round but it will knock the bullet in the brass. I am not using any powder or primers until I get it chambering the round correctly. Could someone please help me?
Thanks

Quote from Reloader on April 6, 2008, 2:26 amAlso even when I Put in an empty 223 rem brass casing in the mag it will not chamber it. When I open a box of factory winchester 223 50g it chambers it fine.

Quote from Reloader on April 7, 2008, 7:28 pmCan you manualy chamber a round and extract it easliy? If so its not a reloading/resizing problem, Its a rifle/magazine problem. All of Dillons dies are of top quality and resize the brass to minimum spec, so they should chamber fine.
Also, You will need to put a good crimp on the bullet to keep it in the case. the bullets wont get bashed back into the case if you put a firm crimp on it.

Quote from Reloader on April 11, 2008, 2:15 amYou have your full size re-size die adjusted down all the way? With the handle in the down position the die should be adjusted down in the tool head so that it is a hair away from the shell plate. If you are not re-sizing properly it may hang up in the chamber. DId hte spent casings come from your rifle?

Quote from Reloader on April 11, 2008, 5:51 pmI have new brass. I can manually chamber a round just fine. My rifle mags are Nato mags and function fine with factory ammo. I will look at it tonight and post again on Saturday. Thank you for all your replies.

Quote from Reloader on April 12, 2008, 3:35 pmtypically no. only with bullets having a cannelure, or dotted line around the bullet, do you need a heavy crimp. For best accuracy, a light crimp is best.

Quote from Reloader on April 13, 2008, 9:09 pmI tore my tool head apart today and installed all dies fresh. I think I maybe got a little closer to sloving the problem. The bullet still doesn't chamber without pulling back the charging handle and letting go. In my hornady book it states the the COL is 2.200 with VMAX bullets. Is that the max or is that what it should be. I am at 2.199. Thanks

Quote from Reloader on April 15, 2008, 12:04 amBefore loading test rounds, see if a sized, empty case freely chambers and extracts. If it does, then it could be the ogive of the projectile is contacting the beginning of the rifling, preventing the round from chambering fully. If a sized, empty case has chambering problems, then run the size die down another 1/16th turn at a time until it fits.
