Primer pickup problems

Page 1 of 2Next

Someone help me out.....  Things work fine for awhile, then the primer slide doesn't come back enough to pick up the primer!  I've tried bending the operating rod, etc..  What do I need to adjust!!  I've taken this thing apart, cleaned... etc. to the point that my old Rock Chucker would probably turn out more rounds per hour worked.

Someone, please help and if possible send a diagram of what needs to be adjusted to get this 550B working like it should

If you can manually pull the slide back to pick up  a primer, then the bracket that the op-rod fits into must be lowered around the primer shield until it almost touches the frame of the machine. Another possibility is that the two screws that secure the roller bracket are loose, and it isn;t pushing the primer slide back far enough.

Another possibility is that the cup and punch on the end of the slide are too tall, and hit the primer instead of going undcerneath it. Measuring from the underside of the slide to the top of the cup should be 1.215-1.220|"tall. If necessary, use a clamp or vise to reseat them.

Thank you!  I will try the remedies....  To see what works.

Maybe I need to branch out.....  I've made no adjustments to the machine as far as "settings" go.  Scared to mess up the "factory" settings!!  I will give the suggestions a try, but, if I start messing with the factory settings of the op rod bracket (#13887), will I make things worse......  You guy's are the expert's, I'm just being cautious, and retentive.

Have I F'ed things up by trying to bend the op rod to make things work?  And the height of the seating cup is 1.214", also adjusted to "factory" delivered settings.

I've just given up on the primer feed. New operating rod, new tip on feeder tube, a good cleaning and it still doesn't work properly. Primers are too expensive to waste. I'm going back to my hand priming tool.

Why don't you phone us when you can be in front of the machine for assistance? Much faster, easier for us to help you that way.

Sounds like the small spring loaded pin that keeps the primers in the tube until the Primer seating cup comes back to pickup a new primer is sticking and won't let the slide come all the way back. A good cleaning might help.

Lowering the op-rod bracket worked for me; was having the same issue. Thank you!

Do I feel for you! I'm now having the same problem.

My system went from smooth operation with small primers to smooth operation with large primers.  Upon going back to using small primers, everything went to heck in a hand basket.  No way, no how, will this 550B prime cases anymore.  The priming slide will not stop binding up on me and when I get it to stop binding up as much, it won't go back quite far enough.   Had it apart and cleaned it up with rubbing alcohol, made sure everything was put together as in the manual, even printed out the trouble shooting information on this problem and have followed it closely; nothing works.  What gives?  (Except me that is; about to give up on the whole thing and go red...)  I've tried a new primer tube end, new primer cup and spring, cleaned out the plastic primer stop pin, adjusted the rod to spec and even lowered it to the fame to increase the leverage. The closest I can get this system to work is by placing a slim cardboard shim beneath the black metal one but even then, while working better, the slide will NOT go back quite far enough to pick up a primer. I have so many hours into trouble shooting this that I'm about ready to puke. When I set the system up as it was and always has worked, it binds up in serious way. Not remotely usable.

Been working on the problem for two weekends now and it looks like Dillon will have to be called on this one.  With next Friday being the first day I'll be able to talk to them while at my press; we'll see what they come up with then.
